Would-be robber caught by quick-thinking shoppers
A WOULD-BE thief was stopped in her tracks thanks to the swift action of Wetherby shoppers this week.
The woman snatched a bag from a trolley in Morrisons on Tuesday lunchtime and ran towards the shop exit.
But when victim Peggy Kitchen, 77, of Bramham, shouted for help, her fellow shoppers set off in pursuit of the culprit.
The female thief was caught and the pensioner’s bag was returned, while police were called to deal with her.
Mrs Kitchen said: “I want to say a big thank you to the people who helped me. I had stupidly just put my bag down for a second while I was looking at the daffodils.
“I saw her run off and I shouted, ‘stop her, stop her’. Thanks to the people who caught her I got my money back. I’m very grateful.”
Sgt Matthew Appleyard of Wetherby Neighbourhood Policing Team said a 25-year-old eastern European woman had been arrested and charged with theft.
She has been bailed and is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on March 18.
