Woman stole booze from Asda

EACH time she returned to her home town, Nicola Lind seemed to land herself in trouble with the law, Harrogate magistrates were told.

The court heard last Thursday how Lind and another woman had gone shopping to Harrogate's Asda store on February 13 and security staff had watched her piling items into a trolley before leaving through a side entrance.

Sam Rogers, prosecuting, said it had been just after 11am when staff followed Lind outside and detained her until police arrived.

In interview Lind had claimed she had never left the store so could not have stolen what had been in her trolley. She claimed the goods were worth around 100 – a search found she had 30 on her – and that a friend had been going to pay the bill.

Birthday

When Lind pleaded guilty to theft of goods worth 221.72 the court heard the conviction put her in breach of a conditional discharge she had been handed by Harrogate magistrates last November after she had admitted theft of 54.90 worth of lager from Mills' shop in Devonshire Place.

Lind, a 25-year-old restaurant worker living in Romford, Essex, was said by her solicitor Andrew Tinning to hold down a responsible job. He added: ''It seems she gets into trouble when she comes back to see her family in Harrogate. Before the previous incident she had split up with her partner and had come to stay in her home town.''

Alcohol

He said the latest theft had occurred while Lind had been on a visit home for a nephew's birthday celebrations. She had been in Asda with another woman.

The offence had not been Lind's idea but she had gone along with it. ''It got a bit out of hand and the other person was putting more and more into the trolley,'' said Mr Tinning who added that most of the haul had been alcohol.

Presiding magistrate David Gravells resentenced Lind for the lager theft, fining her 100. For the Asda theft he imposed a 165 fine with 85 costs and a 15 victim surcharge.

Mr Gravells said the court had considered ordering unpaid work. He added: ''But we think a better way as you are working is to fine you. So it has proved to be an expensive shopping expedition.''
