Westgate plans welcomed by town residents
PUBLIC feedback on plans to introduce parking restrictions on Wetherby's busiest through road have been welcomed by local residents.
In a bid to ease the chronic traffic congestion currently frustrating more than 14,000 motorists a day, Leeds City Council has begun consultations with town councillors and the emergency services on its proposals to introduce limited waiting and no waiting at any time restrictions on certain parts of narrow Westgate.
Following persistent pressure from the Wetherby News, which has been highlighting the misery drivers face on Westgate for months, restrictions could soon be enforced on both sides of the road from Caxton Street up to just beyond number 62 on the right hand side of the road from Wetherby.
So far the plans have been welcomed by residents and one Wetherby resident, David Wheeler, says he would like the authorities to go even further.
“Your recent article in the Wetherby News was of great interest and help to road safety in Wetherby - thank you,” he said.
“I noticed in your article that some parties wanted vehicles to remain being parked along there to prevent motorists from speeding.
“I would like to suggest that Westgate be made a 20mph zone from Crossley Street through to Wetherby bridge.
“This would help solve the problem of the speeding motorists if the parking restrictions are enforced and I would be interested to assess local opinion.”
