Victorian terrace houses in Knaresborough could be demolished.

REVISED plans for the demolition of six Victorian terrace houses in Knaresborough's Conservation Area were considered by Knaresborough Town Council.

The controversial plans will see the terrace houses at 2 - 10, Boroughbridge Road and 138, High Street demolished to make way for four new houses and three flats to be built at the corner site.

Speaking at the meeting on February 1, Wendy Sanderson who was representing Knaresborough Civic Society, said it now 'reluctantly' acknowledged the structural report that had been carried out on the present state of the houses and the society would not be objecting to the demolition.

"We will be keeping a close eye on the houses and we have a number of points we hope Harrogate Borough Council will consider when the new build takes place, but we reluctantly follow the professionals' advice that these buildings have to be demolished," said Ms Sanderson.

"The Civic Society knows that changes can occur to historical buildings and it's important that buildings are appreciated, though we know that this comes with practical considerations."

Knaresborough Town Council had no objection to the plans though councillors are to reiterate their request to the applicants, Winston UK Ltd, a local company, that they consider widening the pavements outside the frontage of the houses by reducing the size of the front gardens.
