Tesco puts in new store plan

TESCO has submitted a fresh planning application for a new store on the old gas board site in Harrogate.

The retail giant is emphasising the eco-friendly credentials of the planned 45,000sq foot superstore, which will use "leading-edge technologies" to cut energy, waste and artificial lighting.

The site, off Ripon Road in New Park, will also be landscaped, and Oak Beck "revitalised".

Harrogate Borough Council will now consider the application, which has been drawn up after consultation with residents, where feedback revealed 70 per cent supported the store.

But opposition has also been strong since Tesco announced its intentions in 2006.

The company's corporate affairs manager, Deborah Hayeems, said Tesco was proud to be creating more than 360 jobs at the site.

Meanwhile, budget supermarket chain ALDI is seeking permission to build a store at the Oak Beck business park.
