Symphony orchestra returns to town
CELBRATING 40 seasons with Leeds Symphony Orchestra, conductor Martin Binks is delighted this weekend to be bringing the acclaimed orchestra back to Knaresborough.
For nearly 25 years, Martin and the orchestra have performed two concerts every season, one in November and one in February, in the town.
”I’m pleased to be back in Knaresborough this weekend. I was born and bred here and my parents, who have just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, were married in Holy Trinity Church, Knaresborough,” said Martin, who has been conductor with the LSO since May 1970, and conductor for Knaresborough Choral Society since 1999.
“They now live in Norwich, both aged 93. My mother was a Wheelhouse and a well known name in Knaresborough history.
“The first ever concert with the LSO was in St John’s Church,” added Martin. “But at the suggestion of the late Arnold Kellett, the venue changed to King James’s School.”
Tomorrow’s concert features renowned violinist Marat Bisengaliev as guest soloist, playing Tchaikovshy’s Violin Concerto in D.
The programme also includes Weber’s Overture: Jubel, Swan of Tuonela and Finlandia by Sibelius and Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 in C minor.
“This will be Marat’s seventh appearance with the orchestra in Knaresborough and those who have heard him on previous occasions wiull know of this Kazakstani virtuoso,” said Martin.
Founded in 1890, the orchestra is one of the leading ones in Yorkshire, performing a busy schedule of ten concerts a year. Its full playing strength is 85. Over the years, Martin and the orchestra have worked with leading soloists, including violinist Maret Nisengaliev, guitarist Craig Ogden and pianist John McCabe.
l The concert starts at 7.30pm at the school.
Tickets, priced 10 and 8 (children free), are available from Dragonfly, 32, Market Place, Knaresborough or on the door.
