Students celebrate league table success

RIPON Grammar has retained its position as one of the region's top performing schools, while others in the area are also celebrating the success of their students in league tables published this week.

The Grammar School – one of three selective schools in North Yorkshire – was ranked second-best for A-level results and third for GCSEs across the county, according to the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Headmaster at Ripon Grammar Martin Pearman said good relationships between staff and pupils and support from the community were both key to success.

strengths

"We benefit from not being a massive school. We have 830 pupils and this means every child is known as an individual. We know what they are capable of and what their strengths are."

North Yorkshire was ranked highly among the country's 150 local education authorities - 13th for A-levels and 21st for GCSEs.

The number of North Yorkshire students gaining five or more higher grade GCSEs, including English and maths, was well above the national average – 59 per cent, against 51.

'tremendous result'

County Coun Jim Clark, North Yorkshire's executive member for schools, said: "This is a tremendous result for our young people and school staff who have worked extremely hard to reach the highest standards.

"These results once again show North Yorkshire's commitment to ensuring that all students can meet their full potential and that our schools continue to offer excellence and a broad and balanced curriculum."
