Shoppers invited to take a fresh look at lingerie
LINGERIE and underwear artwork by a young designer from Ripon has gone on display in a department store in the city.
The 20 drawings by Lucy Lawrence, which also feature fabric samples, have gone on show in the lingerie department of Philip Hall.
Lucy, 24, who currently works as a hairdresser across the road at DMG Barbers on North Street, spent two years working in the design industry after studying fashion at De Montfort University in Leicester before going travelling three years ago.
encouragement
"I never saw them as art – they were just my designs but my friends and family saw something and encouraged me to get them up on sale," she said.
"They are for people who appreciate underwear and don't see it as something you just wear under your clothes."
The designs would conventionally be used to show manufacturers what the lingerie would look like on women, with the fabric samples providing the feel of the garment.
different collections
Lucy said she has lots of ideas for different collections and themes and plans to change the works on display as the fashion year progresses.
Anthony Blackburn, owner of Philip Hall, knows Lucy's family and when he learned about the designs he was keen to get the drawings on display in his store.
'good reactions'
"We have had some good reactions to the work and I think they enhance the overall store experience," he said.
"In many chain stores, you just find corporate posters but every piece of art Lucy has put into the store has a story behind it."
Lucy, who grew up in Marton cum Grafton, returned to the area just before Christmas after training and working as a barber in London and Brighton for the past year.
She is keen to focus on barbering but wants to get back involved in designing underwear in the future.
passions
"Since I left the fashion industry, I have missed it on a daily basis, but I'm going to concentrate on my barbering for the moment.
"Barbering and fashion design are two completely different things but I love them both."
Lucy said her ultimate goal was to have her own barber's shop while also doing freelance work in the fashion industry as a designer or illustrator.
