Readers share their ironmonger memories
SEVERAL readers have contacted the Knaresborough Post to give more details about our picture from the past last week which featured Henry's Ironmongers on the High Street.
Mr Tim Harris, who used to live in Knaresborough and attended the Grammar School in the early 1940s, remembers the shop as he used to pass it every day on his way to school.
The shop on the opposite corner of Butter Lane was Brown’s Furnishers whilst Mr Harris also pointed out another clue to the age of the photo.
The ironmongery is advertising Pyrex above its smaller display window and Mr Harris believed Pyrex was invented in 1916 and therefore probably found its way to Knaresborough around the 1930s.
Many thanks to Mr Harris, who now lives in Guiseley, for his information.
Another reader, Mr Brian Hill from Knaresborough, confirmed the furniture shop on Butter Lane was B Brown’s Furnishers. He used to work for them as a furniture remover. This was in the 1950s /60s.
Mrs Rosemary Mills and Mrs Broadbelt also confirmed the shop on the corner of Butter Lane was Brown’s, whilst Mr Barry Dawson said Henry's Ironmongers was on the site of the one time Red Bear pub. The pub was de-licensed about 1909 so the photo must have been taken after that time.
Mr Hubert Howard said before the shop was Henry’s it was Albert Pratt’s Ironmongers in the 1930s.
