Racial abuse on train - police appeal

A RACIALLY motivated attack on a young woman travelling from Starbeck has prompted a police appeal.

The 25-year-old oriental woman was abused by three drunk men after they boarded a York bound train at Starbeck Station.

She had been travelling with two friends on the 7.05pm service to York on Saturday February 27.

PC Craig Virco of the British Transport Police said she was subjected to "a torrent of racial abuse by three rowdy, intoxicated youths".

"The three youths boarded the train at Starbeck railway station and verbally abused the victim before leaving the train at Poppleton," he said.

"The victim was extremely upset by the group's behaviour, and feared for her safety."

The second male is said to be about 6ft tall, with a shaved head, and was wearing a black jumper or cardigan, blue jeans and white trainers. Finally, the third male is described as about 5ft 9in tall, with a shaven head, and wearing a white jumper and jeans.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and it is important that we trace those responsible," said PC Virco. "I would like to appeal to anyone who was travelling on this train who may have witnessed the incident to contact police."
