Racecourse avenue to honour Diamond Jubilee

Ripon Racecourse is to mark the 60 years of The Queen’s reign with an avenue of 12 cherry trees through the grounds.
The racecourse is one of 59 around the country that has joined the Jubilee Woods project.
The racecourse’s grounds staff have laid out an avenue of cherry tree saplings through the site’s main car park.
Stephen Atkin, Chief Executive of the Racecourse Association, said: “We are delighted that all racecourses are participating in the campaign. It is a mark of appreciation for the contribution The Queen makes to British horse racing as well as recognition of the importance of the environment and racecourses’ contribution to the wider community.
“We are proud to be involved within the Jubilee Woods Project and what an exciting way to celebrate by making such a memorable mark on our courses, which can be remembered and admired for years to come”
The racing industry’s involvement will take in every racecourse in the UK, from Perth to Folkestone as well as aptly named Goodwood and Aintree race tracks.
Taunton Racecourse is to plant a coppice of birch which will provide sustainable fence building materials in years to come, Hexham Racecourse will be planting a copse of Royal oaks, creating a lasting legacy for the Northumberland track, while Haydock Park is planting 400 trees and Huntingdon 100.
At Aintree, a tree will be planted close to the most famous fence that horses jump in the Grand National – Becher’s Brook.
