"I use cannabis instead of alcohol" - court
A MAN who told police he used cannabis instead of alcohol was told by a court a conviction for drug possession should serve as a lesson to him.
Shane Andrew Beadle, 21, pleaded guilty at Harrogate Magistrates' Court last Thursday (Mar 4) to having cannabis on him when police saw him getting out of a car in New Row, Boroughbridge, late on February 24.
Prosecutor Sam Rogers said when officers approached him they could smell cannabis and Beadle, of Spellow Grove, Staveley, near Knaresborough, handed over a small amount of the drug which had been in his pocket.
A search of his car had disclosed two further wraps which, in interview, Beadle had said were all for his personal use.
In mitigation Steven Culleton said Beadle was a casual user of cannabis whose arrest had perhaps shown him ''further use would be inappropriate.'' He had been using the drug as an alternative to alcohol.
Presiding magistrate Gordon Charlton, who ordered a conditional discharge for 12 months along with 85 costs and a destruction order on the seized drugs, told Beadle: ''One hopes this is a salutary lesson.''
