Police foil Wetherby bank scam bid

TWO Wetherby police officers detained a man who was trying to scam HSBC bank employees out of hundreds of pounds through deception this week.

The man, described by police as in his early 20s and from the Middlesbrough area, tried to exchange 155,000 Icelandic krona (ISK) for British pounds at the Wetherby branch on Thursday afternoon but claimed the Icelandic currency was actually similar-looking Swedish Krona (SEK) which currently fetches a much better rate..

Had the man’s alleged deception succeeded he would have made off with at least 900 pounds as opposed to 53 according to Wetherby police.

The man tried to make a quick get-away but was caught on foot by PCSO Mick Driscoll and Police Special Paul Rowden who chased him down the street. He was arrested at the North Street carpark and has since been bailed by Killingbeck CID pending further inquiries.
