Pledge to keep free car parking
PARKING in Wetherby will remain free for the foreseeable future, the town's ward councillors have promised this week.
Speaking at this month’s Wetherby Town Council meeting, councillors Alan Lamb and Gerald Wilkinson said work was ongoing to find a solution to the town’s chronic parking problems.
Coun Lamb said: “We’re absolutely against charging in Wetherby - it would be a disaster for the town.”
But Franco del Buono, owner of the Angel, who was present at the meeting, questioned the sense of having a lorry park so close to the town centre, saying it brought no business into the town.
Coun Lamb said lorry drivers use local facilities and the site is leased by a commercial operator who needs the income from the lorry park to make it viable.
He added: “The best solution we have available is what we have at the moment. While it may not be perfect for your business, it’s the best we can do for now.”
Melvyn Jones of A1 Financial Services said he had heard the lorry park would be taken over by Morrisons when the current operator’s lease was terminated.
But Coun Wilkinson said the car park would be available to other shoppers, not just Morrisons customers.
He said the long-term plan was to make the Hallfield Lane car park a two-hour limit, with the Wilderness and possibly Crossley Street car parks limited to four hours and a long-stay car park created at another site, which the Wetherby News understands is at the Ramada Jarvis roundabout, although discussions are still ongoing.
