Physiotherapists aiming high for prostate cancer charity

A SCARCROFT woman and her friend have set themselves a £10,000 fundraising target in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Physiotherapists, Gemma Plowright and Laura Proctor will aim to complete a 86km mountain trek in New Zealand this November and the pair are also planning to organise a whole host of local fundraising events to raise cash for the charity.

The Prostate Cancer Charity, which offers support and information to anyone affected by prostate cancer, is a charity close to the heart of 26-year-old Gemma from Scarcroft.

Gemma’s father, Richard, is currently battling the disease after being diagnosed with it last year and since that time he has undergone two operations and is now receiving radiotherapy at St James’s Hospital, Leeds.

Determined Gemma also tragically lost her mum five years ago and finding out her father had cancer spurred her on to raise awareness of the disease alongside her friend, Laura.

This week Gemma and Laura, also 26, started their fundraising campaign at Harrogate Hospital alongside Gemma’s father, Richard.

The trio sold The Prostate Charity’s merchandise and handed out leaflets in the hospital canteen.

Gemma said: “Prostate cancer affects almost as many men as breast cancer affects women and 35,000 men are diagnosed every year.

“However, an astonishing 70 percent of adults in the UK still do not know what the prostate does, let alone about prostate cancer itself, which is why it is essential for us to raise awareness.

“All of the donations received will support the great work of The Prostate Cancer Charity, enabling continued Prostate Cancer research.

“We hope to raise public and political awareness to help the charity keep on providing much needed support for men directly affected by the disease as well support for their families.”
