Old mill converted to five new homes

A DARLEY landmark which had fallen into disrepair has been converted into five houses.

Fringill Mill, built in 1820 as a flax spinning and corn mill, is one of only four mills in the country with its own internal water wheel.

The 24ft diameter water wheel will be retained as part of the 1.5m project from Fringill Mill Developments Limited and main contractor Ellmore Construction.

Both parties have looked to keep as much of the building’s original structure as possible, removing “an unsightly old extension” - with the help of Yorkshire-based Brick-Tie Limited - so as to strengthen the original walls.

The nine-month restoration project has resulted in “five classical residences with a contemporary feel”.

Brian Mathers, who lives close to the mill, said he welcomed the redevelopment

“It’s good that a nice old building has been rescued. It’s been sitting derelict as both an eyesore and a wasted resource,” he said.

Fringill Mill was commandeered during the Second World War for the manufacture of parachute ropes and camouflage netting. Struck by lightning in 1945, it was burnt out, and had been used more recently as an animal feed supplier.

Last month it was announced that Darley Mill Centre would become a three-level shopping centre, following refurbishment and the restoration of the site’s water wheel.

The attraction, which will create around 25 full and part-time jobs, opens in mid-March and will include a children’s play area and garden centre.
