Now we've officially got Fairtrade City status

A TWO-year campaign to win 'Fairtrade City' status for Ripon has achieved success.

News of the official recognition came as local campaigners met for a banquet to mark 'Fairtrade Fortnight'.

The Fairtrade Foundation made the award in recognition of the widespread support from the community for its ideals of supporting producers in the world's developing countries.

major achievement

It is a major achievement for the Ripon action group, which includes representatives from churches and local business.

"We're absolutely delighted to achieve the status and very grateful to all those who have made it possible," said chairman Linda Scannell.

Ripon joins a large and growing group of Yorkshire cities, towns and villages awarded Fairtrade status, including Leeds, Harrogate, and York.

The award recognises a significant level of support for Fairtrade among local businesses, schools and churches, backed by Ripon City Council's agreement to support Fairtrade and offer their tea and coffee at council events.

announcement

The announcement of Ripon's successful application was made at a 'Fairtrade Banquet' in The Arches at Holy Trinity Church to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, which ended at the weekend. The 75 guests, including city council member Jeremy Banyard, enjoyed a meal entirely based on Fairtrade and locally-sourced products.

Coun Banyard said the award was an honour for the whole city. "It shows we support those who are less-fortunate than we are. We need Fairtrade in this country as well," he said.

'fair deal'

Retired local farmer Foster Britton, a keen Fairtrade supporter, agreed. "It's important for all farmers to get a fair deal, whether in this country or abroad."

Ripon will have to re-apply in a year's time to maintain its status, so during 2010 the local action group will be contacting schools and businesses to offer information about Fairtrade and seek further support. The action group can be contacted on 01765 620362 or 605638.
