Nidderdale Festival kicks off tonight

PREPARATIONS are being finalised for the start of the Nidderdale Festival.

The 13th annual event launches this evening with a members reception at St Cuthbert's Church in Pateley Bridge, which will be attended by local mayors, councillors, sponsors and invited guests.

The first event of the festival, which will follow the reception, is a performance by the popular Harrogate Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

This will kick off a varied and interesting programme of old festival favourites and newcomers, covering music, talks, walks, arts, drama and exhibitions, as well as a range outdoor events.

Two must-see events take place on the last weekend of the festival, when Dame Joan Bakewell will be speaking at the Pateley Bridge Memorial Hall on Friday, July 17, while the acclaimed Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell will be performing with her band on Saturday, July 18.

Other notable appearances include soprano Marika van der Meer at Birstwith and Nidd Chorale at Middlesmoor Church.

There will be bands on the Joe Longster Bandstand in the park, talks on Van Gogh by art historian Professor Anthony Slinn and on Agincourt by author Juliet Barker, and Chris Henderson's Railways of Nidderdale and Memorial Restoration by Friends of St Mary's Churchyard.

The festival will finish on Sunday, July 19, with an End of Festival Songs of Praise at St Cuthbert's with the Tewit Youth Band, who will then be performing the last Festival Band in the Park that afternoon.

l For listings and details of how to book, visit www.nidderdalefestival.org.uk or call Tim or Mary Whitney on 01423 712 584.

Tickets for events at the Memorial Hall can be bought on the door but prebooking is advised. Outdoor pursuits and walks are already mainly booked up but there are some places left for caving and on some of the farm walks.

As part of the festival, Peter Scott will be showcasing his artwork, which is mainly acrylics or pen and ink inspired by a range of subjects.

Mr Scott lives at Propsect House, Millfield Street, Pateley Bridge, which will be open to the public tomorrow, July 11 and July 18 from 10am to 4pm.
