New life for neglected patch of land?
A NEGLECTED, overgrown and disused stretch of land on Waterside could be turned into a terraced walkway.
A scheme being investigated by Knaresborough Town Council could see the strip of riverbank between Marigolds Cafe and the Castle Mills houses developed to open up views of the river and the viaduct to eventually provide level access for people to walk alongside the river and enjoy a public seating area.
Coun Andrew Willoughby has masterminded the scheme which councillors unanimously agreed to pursue when they met for Monday night’s town council meeting.
“This piece of land is not included in Renaissance Knaresborough’s plans for improving the Waterside area,” said Coun Willoughby. “Currently the land is owned by Harrogate Borough Council and let on a licence to the boat proprietor at Marigolds.
“I would like to see the town council negotiate with Harrogate Borough Council to take over the licence on this land so we can improve the area, remove the unsuitable vegetation and provide a railing alongside the road and so open up the views.
“If the town council get control of this land, future plans to create a walking and seating area can go ahead without delay and more easily.”
