New hall for Green Hammerton now in place

AFTER ten years of fund raising, villagers in Green Hammerton were delighted to see their new village hall finally installed.

A 100-tonne crane lifted the innovative building, made up of five 12m-long steel-framed modules, each weighing around four tonnes, into place at its new site next to the playing fields on Harrogate Road.

The new building is replacing two old facilities – the current village hall, known as The Reading Room, located in the centre of the village and the cricket club's 'temporary' home for ten years, which was situated on the site of the new building.

Villagers would like to thank the generous support of local companies including the Shepherd Group and the giving of grants to help bridge the funding gap from Biffaward, WREN, Yorventure, North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate District Council.

Chairman of Green Hammerton Recreational Charity, Brian Halling said: "This is a major development for our village and we owe a big vote of thanks to all the people who have assisted us to get so far.

"We are looking forward to putting the new modern facilities to good use. Having running hot water and the use of modern heated loos will be a luxury for the villagers who are used to the old facilities!"

Stephen Price, Shepherd Group Director and Green Hammerton resident added: "This will be a fantastic new addition to the village and we are delighted to be involved in a project that will be of such benefit to the local community."

The building should be fully operational by the end of April.
