A NEW commanding officer has taken charge of the 21 Engineer Regiment at Claro Barracks in Ripon.

Lt Col Jack Nicholson replaces Bobby Walton-Knight, who will be working at the Army headquarters based in Andover, Hampshire, after being promoted to Colonel.

“It is a real privilege and honour to be selected to command 21 Engineer Regiment. It has always had a great reputation throughout the Army and I will endeavour to ensure that I maintain that tradition,” he said.

“On a personal level, it’s really good to be back in Ripon having previously served here with 38 Engineer Regiment just before it moved to Northern Ireland in 2008.

“I made a lot of good friends last time and I am really looking forward to renewing some old acquaintances.

“We will be deploying once again to Afghanistan later on in the year and it will be a real comfort to know that the soldiers and their families will have the continued support of the entire city.”

Lt Col Nicholson joined the Army in September 1989 and has served in Northern Ireland, Germany, Macedonia and Sierra Leone.

After his stint with 38 Engineer Regiment as a Field Squadron Commander, he was appointed to the Ministry of Defence Operations Directorate before a swift promotion to the Army Headquarters in the post of Staff Officer 1, Future Equipment Plans.

It was during this last post he was selected to command the 21 Engineer Regiment.
