MENWITH HILL COLUMN
School News
FEBRUARY is Black History Month which at RAF Menwith Hill is celebrated as ‘African American Black History Month’.
There are a huge range of events taking place throughout the base from poetry readings and essay competitions to fashions shows and a fish fry.
The school is also involved by holding its very own Essay Contest open to all children in our High School.
The theme is the Little Rock Nine sometimes known as the Little Rock Crisis which was an incident in which nine African-American students were prevented from attending Little Rock Central High School in 1957 during the Civil Rights Movement.
Children are being asked to describe how they may have felt being one of the “Little Rock Nine”, why they think this was an important milestone for African Americans and America itself and finally, whether they think it changed the course of history for African Americans?
Winners will be picked for different age ranges and as well as having their words read at the Black History Month Banquet, the whole class of the two winning entries will be the recipients of a pizza party.
All our school students were lucky enough to take part in a very special art workshop run by Tribal Arts and the Rb Gallery in Harrogate.
The two-day programme of workshops ended with an exhibition of the Tribal Masks made by the children aided by the expertise, knowledge and encouragement of the professionals.
Outdoor Education Fieldtrip
ON a very windy and wet January morning, our Middle School Outdoor Education class visited Pateley Bridge to complete a circular walk in Nidderdale.
Armed with maps and warm waterproof clothing, the group set out taking shelter in the valley from the winds that were gusting up to 50mph.
Venturing into the woods the group found muddy paths and rain turning puddles into ponds with winds at the Tarn making for an entertaining coffee break.
Unfortunately the weather stopped the proposed return journey via the cliffs and the group opted for the saver option of returning on the muddy woods path.
It was some of the worst weather Nidderdale had experienced so far this winter but it made for a trip to remember.
