Megan has designs on bed race programme

AS part of preparations for the 2010 Bed Race, King James's School art department held a competition to design a cover for the race programme, which sells about 6,000 copies.

The theme of the competition was ‘Occupations’, incorporating the various types of work undertaken in Knaresborough because participants in the Bed Race come from all walks of life.

There were 250 entries from King James’s Year 7 pupils and a winner was selected after the selection narroweddown to 10.

Megan Pollard,11, won the competition with a design which cleverly featured aspects of the theme and the race. Her design will go on the cover of this year’s programme.

Head of Art Simon Crawford said: “The standard of entries was exceptionally high, showing the inventiveness of the pupil’s designs, and it was difficult choosing a winner.

“Thanks to the Knaresborough Lions for their generosity in presenting a prize to Megan for her winning design and for donating art materials to the school’s art department.”

Alan Gilbert of the Knaresborough Lions, who organise the Bed Race, said they were pleased to have involved pupils again in this way.

“The Bed Race is designed to bring benefit to the whole of Knaresborough,” he said.

“The race has been run every year since 1966 and, in that time, it has grown to become one of the town’s major attractions, drawing in thousands of people, generating funds for local charities and opportunities for local business. At the same time, it is first and foremost a fun event for participants.”

The 2010 Bed Race programme is under production and will be published in May.
