Meet Bilton's first ever Gala King

A LITTLE boy in Bilton is making history as the annual gala's first ever king.

Ten-year-old Joseph Atkinson, of Bilton Grange School, has been chosen as the king of Bilton Gala, to be held this year on Monday, May 3.

The only issue for organisers is what he is to wear – the committee have a selection of gowns from previous years, but they have never dressed a boy before.

Now, members are hunting for some suitable attire.

Debbie Dilasser said: "This is the first ever king, in 31 years. Having a boy throws up the dilemma of how to dress him, and our stock of attendants' dresses is rather dated."

Proud

She said Joseph, who went before a panel of three judges before he could be confirmed in his position, is settling in well to his new role.

"He's very excited, and proud. He's quite a confident young boy, so I'm sure he will be fine on the day," she added.

Joseph will be helped on the day by attendants Katherine Meade, 11, of Richard Taylor School, and Lottie Willmore, 10, from Bilton Grange School.

Preparations are well underway for the annual event, which is to be held on May Day Bank Holiday Monday.

Top attraction this year is to be the attendance of one of Britain's top stuntmen, Mark Stannage, in the main arena.

Competition

But there is still plenty of space for stalls and exhibits, and local groups are encouraged to get in touch.

Committee members are keen to hear from anyone who wants to get involved, either by sponsoring or donating an outfit for Joseph, providing transport for the king and attendants, or flowers for the parade.

Local groups and schools are reminded to sign up for a float in the parade, and the theme for this year's fancy dress competition is "around the world."
