Lifelong friends in twin towns
IT IS a tremendous achievement for both towns that Knaresborough and Bebra's town twinning partnership is this year celebrating its 40th anniversary.
More than 80 guests have arrived in town this weekend to stay with host families and enjoy their hospitality.
Both town twinning committees have worked hard to sustain the friendships and ensure that regular annual visits take place to and from each country.
The schools in both towns have been involved allowing hundreds of pupils over the years to enjoy and sample another’s country and style of living and in some cases, make lifelong friendships.
One wonders if those who started the twinning back in 1970 (or to be exact 1969) ever dreamt that 40 years on, town twinning would still be so strong in 2010, and looks set to grow even more.
Many towns do not manage to maintain such strong ties and it’s to their detriment, so Knaresborough and Bebra town twinners should be proud of themselves.
THE announcement has come that Allerton Quarry is the preferred site for the new incinerator plant, the first of its kind in England.
Complete with a 260-foot chimney to disperse emissions from the incinerator, the multi-million pound recycling plant will deal with thousands of tonnes of waste each year which will be mechanically sorted and processed at the site.
If planning permission is given, construction could begin at the end of next year and be operational in just four years’ time.
For residents living in the vicinity, and those in nearby Knaresborough and Harrogate opposed to the plans, the fight is now on to prevent the massive industrial development coming to the rural Vale of York.
