Knaresborough Chamber of Trade set 'to go green.'

KNARESBOROUGH'S Chamber of Trade and Commerce has a new president following its AGM.

Outgoing president Peter Plews ended his three year stint on Tuesday when he handed over to new President Maurice Bardon.

Mr Bardon is known to many people from his business at The Old Chemist Shop and Tea Rooms in the Market Place.

In his final speech to Chamber members, Peter Plews was pleased to report an increase in membership, the continuing success of the hanging baskets scheme in Knaresborough and also a successful Christmas Market Weekend last December.

"We have strong and close links with Harrogate Borough Council which has helped ensure the hanging basket scheme continues," said Mr Plews.

"I know the committee intends to keep members up to date with regular newsletters, the new town maps are being displayed in notice boards across the town, and we were also pleased to welcome Simon Shaw as our new Town Crier.

"The Chamber's campaign to make Knaresborough a plastic bag free town continues to go well. The specially-produced environmentally friendly cotton carrier bags have sold well at 1 a bag and many shops are still stocking them to sell to customers."

With more social nights planned for members, Mr Plews ended by thanking everyone for their support during his term of office and wishing Mr Bardon luck as he handed over the President's badge of office.

Two presentations were given at the meeting, one by Sean Brennan on Transition Towns, an initiative which identifies long term plans to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and prevent climate change, and a second talk by Gill Lacey, from Renaissance Knaresbrough's Green Group. The group hopes to look at transport issues, alternative energy sources and continue with the town's successful recycling and plastic bag-free schemes.

Anyone who would like more information about the schemes, would like to order more carrier bags, or who wants to join the Chamber of Trade's membership should visit the website at www.exploreknaresborough.co.uk

The site is set up to include links to local businesses.
