Harry's supercar dream becomes a reality

A SCHOOLBOY from Boston Spa has had his dream come true - and raised money in the process.

Harry Garbutt, 14, arranged for an array of supercars to roar into the yard at Boston Spa School before taking his classmates for trips around the block.

He charged 1 for pupils to look at the cars and 10 for them to have a ride in one. With a choice of six supercars - a Ferrari F430, a Ferrari California, a Lotus Exige S and a Lotus 2-11, a Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe and a Porsche Carrera 4S - the students were soon queuing up for a turn.

The money will help pay for Harry and 18 fellow pupils to travel to Morocco as part of a World Challenge trip.

They will spend a week trekking in the Dades Gorge and travelling through remote villages, all paid for through their own fundraising rather than by their parents.

Harry said: "We needed to raise 1,000 each to go on the trek and one of the best ways others have done this in the past is to put on events that other pupils can pay to attend.

"I love supercars and I know lots of my friends do too, so I thought I'd try and get some here."

Paul Brown, director of supercar club curie25 which supplied the two Ferraris, said: "Harry's definitely got a great future in business.

"There aren't many people with the initiative and determination to pull an event like this together and then sell so many tickets for it."

World Challenge is a UK-based school expedition specialist helping pupils gain invaluable experience outside the classroom.

In previous years, Boston Spa School pupils have travelled to Peru, India, China, Norway and Kenya, with a trip to Tanzania planned for 2011.

Kevin Adkins of Boston Spa School said: "World Challenge trips are not your average school trips. They take pupils into exhilirating situations in countries and communities that many of them may never otherwise have the chance to visit.

"As a result, places are allocated to those willing to work towards them over a number of months rather than those who can simply afford them.

"This approach is aimed at encouraging team spirit, innovative ideas and entrepreneurial thinking amongst participating students, all of which were clearly shown by Harry in arranging this event."
