Harrogate rower completes Atlantic challenge

AFTER a gruelling 67 days on the high seas, Matthew Mackaness from Harrogate and his rowing partner Charlie Marlow have achieved a podium finish at the 2009 Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race.

Matthew, age 28 and Charlie, age 27, arrived at English Harbour in Antigua, West Indies, on the morning of Saturday March 13 to a welcome party of close friends and family following their 3,000 mile rowing race which started in La Gomera in the Canary Islands on Monday January 4.

The team finished third in the pairs category, and fifth overall.

Speaking about their epic journey, Matthew, who lost three stone during the race and arrived sporting a full beard, said: "It feels incredible to have finally crossed the finishing line and be back on dry land."

Matthew and Charlie have raised more than 60,000 for charity.
