Harrogate pupil tackles three peaks challenge

A DIABETIC St Aidan's pupil attempted the national three peaks in 24 hours for a charity that supports his condition.

Along with gym staff from the Wetherby Young Offenders Insitute, Matt Goodall, 14, took up the challenge to raise money for the diabetes charity Pump-It. Matt was diagnosed with type one diabetes two years ago.

The climb was the second event for the team who undertook a successful Coast to Coast Ride for the charity earlier this year.

Matt's father, David Goodall, the chairman of Pump-It and a staff member at the Wetherby Young Offenders institute, said: "I'm absolutely astounded by what he's done. To do Snowden or Scafell is one thing but to attempt all three in 24 hours is a massive achievement."

The team successfully climbed Ben Nevis first and at the peak of the Scottish mountain Matt proudly unveiled the Pump-It banner.

After a food stop it was on to Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Arriving at 2.30am, with strengthening winds and heavy rain the ramblers set off for the peak. However it was decided the winds were too strong at the top to unveil the banner so it was back down to base then off to Wales to tackle Snowdon.

Undeterred

Once again driving rain and strong winds hampered the climbers. Undeterred they set off and Matt unveiled the Pump-It banner on top of the second highest peak in the UK.

Before the challenge, staff at the Wetherby Young Offenders Institute had taken time to do a gate collection adding 200 to the Pump-It fund.

Mr Goodall said: "I would like to thank all the gym staff who took part and also the governor at Wetherby Young Offenders Institute for his help and continuing support and not forgetting the two volunteers who drove and made copious amounts of hot drinks."

Pump-It is a charity run under the guise of Harrogate District Hospital which helps diabetics who prefer insulin pump therapy to manage their condition instead of the more usual daily injections.
