Friendships formed and renewed during twin trip

KNARESBOROUGH Silver Band, accompanied by some members of the Town Twinning Committee, have just returned from a week in Bebra, our twin town in Germany. Pat and David Tankard send this report of the visit.

AT the invitation of the Bebra band, TSV Musikzug, Knaresborough Silver Band played three times: in Bebra with a band from Friedrichroda in the former East Germany, as well as TSV Musikzug; in Opfermoor, the geographical centre of Germany; and finally in Bad Hersfeld.

Highlights of the performances were the Post Horn Galop, with a virtuoso solo by the band's musical director, Rob Illsley and an acrobatic performance by Calvin Frith of the trombone solo, The Acrobat, both of which had the audience shouting for more.

The group also visited a salt mine in Merkers, driving 17km underground, and seeing where the Third Reich stored all their gold and works of art, only to be relieved of them by General Eisenhower and his US troops.

We went to Kassel, and the huge water cascade at Herkules, which is like the fountains at Chatsworth or Alnwick Gardens, but on a much grander scale.

We were introduced to the leader of the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg, and to the regional president of Nord-Hessen, meeting them in a new extension to the district hospital in Bad Hersfeld.

Our final event was an afternoon by the lake in Bebra, still an active quarry pond, but nevertheless used for swimming and sailing, followed by a barbecue and games, the culmination of an excellent week, where new friendships were made, and old friendships renewed.

A small group is visiting Bebra in October, and in early April, we visit again to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Town Twinning.

l Anyone interested in joining the visit, or who would like to know more about town twinning, should ring Pat or David Tankard on 01423 866400.
