Family aims for awards victory

FAMILY owners of a Nidderdale farm hope to win pride of place in the Yorkshire Post Environment Awards.

Brother and sister team Ian Walker and Anne Challis of the Studfold Explore Discover and Learn Trail have been shortlisted for the Countryside Award in the second annual event.

The family from Lofthouse has already picked up the AONB Enterprising Farm Award, which they were presented with at the Nidderdale Show last September.

Now they are up against the Heaton Woods Trust and Ragged Robin Conservation Group for the Countryside Award, sponsored by Northern Gas Networks.

"We have fingers, toes and anything else you can think of, crossed," said Anne Challis.

"It's been a lot of hard work this past four or five years, trying to get Studfold up and running. To win this would be the icing on the cake."

The Walkers have had Blayshaw Farm, Lofthouse, for 16 generations and with adjoining Studfold Farm there is 170 acres given over to native sheep, suckler cows, hay cutting and a valley-bottom caravan and camping site.

Studfold Explore Discover and Learn Trail is to re-open on Easter weekend, for more information visit www.studfoldtrails.co.uk
