Ex-quarry may become park

A REDUNDANT quarry in Harrogate could be turned into a park after the borough council said it would try to buy the site from the county council - if that is what the public want.

Grange Quarry, at New Park, had been reserved by the county council as a potential site for a household waste recycling plant, but the authority ultimately opted to build off Penny Pot Lane.

Last Wednesday (Mar 3) Coun Matthew Webber urged Harrogate Council to fight for a public open space on the quarry site, saying it would be an asset to the town.

Coun Michael Newby agreed, saying: "We should grab this opportunity with both hands.

"There may be a bit of a delay as it goes through the necessary process, but if it means progress, so be it."

Harrogate Council voted to consult with residents about changing the planned use of the site to "public open space" and, pending public approval, then enter talks with North Yorkshire County Council about purchasing the site.
