Environmental awards ceremony to take place in Harrogate district.
THE District's most environmentally friendly schools and community groups will gather at the Royal Hall in Harrogate this month for the fourth biennial Bafters awards.
The Bafters are Harrogate Borough Council's environmental awards for schools and community groups.
This year the ceremony, on Thursday, July 9, will be open, free of charge, to members of the public and all are welcome to attend.
The doors open at 5.30pm when primary school-aged children will be able to experience The Envirozone, an area full of unusual environmentally themed activities, including music making on recycled instruments with musician Michael Freeman, our unique electricity-generating exercise bike, and stalls run by St Aidan's and Boroughbridge High Schools.
Complimentary refreshments will be available, supplied by Bettys and Taylors.
The prize-giving ceremony will start at 6.30pm, with a talk by leading environmentalist Professor Sir John Lawton, Chair of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution.
The Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Pat Jones will present the prestigious Bafters Best School and Best Community Group Awards along with other prizes for activities carried out locally to save energy, protect nature and reduce waste.
The Mayor will also announce who has been named as the Environmental Champions 2009.
This prestigious event is the chance for people to support local groups and see a showcase of the best environmental activities in this area, as well as hear from a renowned environmental speaker.
The Bafters awards are kindly sponsored by Harrogate International Centre, ICE Energy, Yorkshire Agricultural Society and Bettys and Taylors.
