Electrical faults at B&B lead owner to court
THE owner of a bed and breakfast in Harrogate has been handed a £5,000 fine for failing to carry out electrical safety work.
Inspectors from Harrogate Borough Council and the Health and Safety Executive served an improvement notice after finding a number of serious electrical safety issues at Azalea Court, 56-58 Kings Road.
But the owner, Yoko Banks, ignored the notice and the case went to Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 20.
She pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the notice and was fined £5,000, while the council was awarded full costs of £2,090.
Magistrates expressed concern that the business had failed to carry out the repairs, continuing to put lives at risk by not addressing the electrical defects.
Coun Stuart Martin, chairman of the council’s licensing committee, said: “Businesses must make sure that their electrical systems are maintained in a safe condition.
“Had this owner complied with the improvement notice then they wouldn’t have had to pay this hefty fine.
“I am happy to say that the electrical system at Azalea Court has now been inspected and tested by a competent electrician and the system is now safe.
“We have also been notified that a competent electrician has now been contracted to maintain the electrics at the premises.”
