East Keswick Flower Club: is holding a Naughty but Nice day in East Keswick village hall on Thursday, August 19, when they will be entertained by Sue Morris. This will run from 2- 4pm and the doors will be open from 1.30pm. Tickets are 7 to include a strawberry tea and they can be obtained from Pat Dickinson, tel. 01937 573378. All are welcome.

Road Works: It seems that the road closures and diversions of the past few weeks are finally over, for the time being at least. It is wonderful to be able to drive down Whitegate and Main Street without having to negotiate a chicane of pot holes. All we need now is for Crabtree Lane and the remainder of Moor Lane to be brought up to the same standard. It is hoped that they are on Leeds City Council’s list for the next financial year. Although the bus drivers did their best to maintain a somewhat restricted service, cars parked on the narrow lanes used by the diversions did cause some problems; normal services are now resumed. Unfortunately we can also expect the return of those who use our roads as a rat run; speeding is all too easy on a good surface. Residents are urged to keep their speed within the legal limit and encourage other road users to slow down while driving through our village.

The Lady Elizabeth Hastings Educational Foundation: Lady Elizabeth Hastings (1682 – 1739) was a lifelong patron of charities for education, the promotion of religion and the relief of poverty. From her home at Ledston Hall (situated 10 miles from Leeds), she founded and supported many Leeds charitable institutions and endeavours. One of her most significant donations was a gift of 1000 in 1721, which ensured the success of the project to build Holy Trinity Church on Boar Lane in Leeds. She also set up and endowed a number of schools in our local area. Lady Elizabeth and her charitable works live on today in the endowments she left to form the Lady Elizabeth Hastings Educational Foundation, which, at the discretion of the trustees, provides grants to people of all ages to help with a broad range of educational needs. Grants can be awarded for help towards fees for academic study and social and physical training, for equipment and books, and to support extra-curricular activities. Applicants must live within a certain geographical area, which includes the ecclesiastical Parish of Bardsey, in which East Keswick is situated. Many villagers have received such grants in recent years, especially university and college students. If you feel you would like to apply, do contact the Parish Office in the Callister Hall, Bardsey, on 01937 574273 or e-mail bardseyparishchur@btinternet.com. You are asked to give your name and address and state whether you are applying for university or other types of study.
