A PENSIONER forced to make a 15-mile detour because of roadworks in his home village found himself in trouble with the law for his actions on the journey.
Jonathan Beer, 65, of Bishop House, Butterfield Close, Bishop Thornton, pleaded guilty at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on Monday to shooting a red light at Starbeck railway crossing on October 7.
Prosecutor Steven Ovenden said Beer’s white Mazda car had gone through the light after it had been flashing for nine seconds and just before crossing barriers started to descend.
Beer, who wrote to the court apologising for his absence – he was on holiday at the time – said he had used the crossing to get home and had been shocked to receive notification of his offence.
It had come during a 10-week road closure which had required him to make a diversion, after visiting his daughter in Harrogate.
Beer was fined £200 with £80 costs, a £15 victim surcharge and three penalty points.
