Date set for Tesco plans
THE fate of a controversial planning application to build a Tesco superstore in Harrogate is to be decided at the end of October.
Plans to build a 24-hour store on the old gas works site at New Park will go before a Harrogate Borough Council committee on October 26.
This week the town's Chamber of Trade and Commerce has reiterated its opposition to the plans following a site visit by business leaders at the end of July.
In its latest objection letter to Tesco, signed by more than 50 members, the chamber listed traffic congestion, traffic safety and gas works safety among its main concerns and "urged" the company to withdraw its proposals.
However members said they were not opposed to the new store on commercial grounds, as they believed it would attract customers to Harrogate from surrounding areas.
