County levies see increase in council tax
COUNCIL tax in Harrogate will rise by £36.77 for the average household after the county council and fire and police services levied rises of between two and three per cent.
The changes mean the basic bill for Band D properties in the district will be 1,543.69 for 2010-11, up from 1,506.92.
North Yorkshire County Council has voted to increase rates by 2.94 per cent on its portion of the bill, an additional 30.18 for a typical property.
A "snow levy" was added to a planned rise of 2.5 per cent to fund road repairs in the wake of the big freeze.
The county’s police service has approved a hike of 2.7 per cent, a rise of about 5.38 for the average household, while the fire authority is asking for an extra 1.21 annually, a two per cent jump.
As previously reported, Harrogate Council - which receives around 15 per cent of the levy - has frozen its council tax precept for the coming year.
Parishes within the district are allowed to charge their residents additional council tax, meaning that last year’s Band D bills ranged from 1,508.52 to 1,545.02.
