Countdown to major celebration

WITH just four weeks to go until Knaresborough's special celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of the first Royal Maundy money being given by King John, preparations are now well underway.

With a major event for the town planned for Easter Saturday, April 3 at Knaresborough Castle, the town will be transported back to medieval days and the year 1210 when the monarch distributed the Maundy gifts.

The Maundy Celebrations Working Group have been meeting regularly to put everything in place and Secretary, Christine Willoughby is looking forward to a successful event.

“We have local schools involved and are currently asking primary school children from years five and six to do some research about King John,” said Christine. “The best three will receive prizes from the Knaresborough Bookshop. All primary school children will also receive a commemorative Maundy coin and accompanying leaflet.”

In attendance at the main event, will be the Bishop of Knaresborough and the Lord Lieutenant, as well as local civic dignitaries including the Mayor of Knaresborough, Coun Mavis Clemmitt.

A full day of activities includes the presenting of 13 special Maundy coins to the 13 chosen recipients, who have been nominated for their work and dedication to Knaresborough.

The Knaresborough Players will be doing a Maundy re-enactment and Rotarian President, Mike Wilkins will be playing the part of King John for the day.

It is hoped to have morris dancing, medieval-themed games and activities for children.

If you would like to be part of this unique Knaresborough event and can help with volunteering on the day, please contact the Town Clerk or any member of the Working Group committee.

Dates for Next Meetings:-

*Tuesday, March 9, Wednesday, March 17 and Monday, March 22. All meetings start at 7.30pm and will be held at Knaresborough House.
