Concern over 60-foot Scarcroft wind turbine
A 60ft high wind turbine will be erected at a Scarcroft farm despite opposition from local people.
Leeds East plans panel said “Yes” to an application from Ms V Goodall for Beechgrove Farm, which lies between Stoney Lane and Ling Lane.
The plans panel decided the turbine would not have a significant adverse impact on the Green Belt or Special Landscape area.
There were objections from some nearby residents, four of whom live on Ling Lane, and from the parish council.
Parish clerk Peter Hart spoke against the plan and said the 11kw plant would provide only enough power for four large domestic fires.
“The farmer sees the chance of cheaper electricity,” he said, “and who can blame him! He seems to have been told that a turbine is the solution but I cannot see anyone else being in favour of it.
“Local people say an 18m high turbine will offend against the Green Belt and also the Special Landscape status which the area has been given.
“The planning department says there are very special reasons for building in the green belt but we say there is none. The farmer has a reason but not a special one and certainly not a very special one.”
Mr Hart said after the meeting that the city council had not given Scarcroft residents reasonable notice of the turbine plan. “Notices on a telegraph pole and a little-used bus stop are scarcely adequate,” he said.
