Knaresborough & District Men's Forum:

ON A cold, wet, dismal day over 50 members gathered for John Gilleghan’s talk ‘A North African Adventure’ hoping for a little sunshine and warmth.

This was not to be, initially at least, as John recounted how his cruise ship battled giant waves in the Bay of Biscay, sustaining damage, injuries and sadly a fatality.

Even in the Mediterranean, the weather did not improve and the ship’s itinerary had to be changed due to the storms.

However, those locations that could be visited were vividly described by John using slides and atmospheric music. Such cities as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, Tripoli and Tunis came to life with tales of palaces, markets, minarets and winding streets. From the continually smoking tour guide, nicknamed ‘Mustafa Fag’, to the wonderful mosaics of Carthage, John’s narrative painted a picture of the region. On a memorable journey through stormy seas we finally reached the sands of Egypt and the pyramids at Giza before, sadly, returning to a cold, wet, dismal Knaresborough.

The Men’s Forum meets at Knaresborough House each Tuesday at 10.15am and is open to all semi-retired and retired gentlemen.

A treat awaits travel and train buffs on Tuesday, February 9 when Mr John Holroyd will be presenting ‘Around Britain by Rail’. A donation of 1.50 on attendance includes a cup of coffee, and new members are most welcome.
