Knaresborough & District Men's Forum:
KNARESBOROUGH folk are lucky to have so many historical buildings on their doorstep, and this week the Forum was told of one such building ‘Ripon Cathedral -Inside and Out’ by Maurice Taylor.
From a primitive construction of timber and turf to the present day structure, the story unfolded through the use of a beautiful slideshow complemented by the sounds of the Cathedral Choir singing. St Wilfred’s original 7th century church of St Peter’s grew over the centuries into what we see today, however the only remains of the original church is the crypt.
Maurice described various architectural aspects of the construction and how it developed over the centuries, along with the many statues, wood-carvings, stained glass windows, jewellery and fabrics that are to be found within the Cathedral. In 1836, the then Ripon Minster became a Cathedral and the then town of Ripon became a city by Royal Charter.
From grisly finds of legless bodies in 15th century coffins to the Royal visit to dispense Maundy Money in 1986, the long and varied story unfolded before ending on an extremely modern note with a solar powered window that may be fitted in the future to power an internal water feature.
The Men’s Forum meets at Knaresborough House each Tuesday at 10.15am and is open to all semi-retired and retired gentlemen.
On March 9, Mrs Helen Richardson will be enlightening members on the “Follifoot Park Riding for the Disabled.” A donation of 1.50 on attendance includes a cup of coffee, and new members are welcome.
On May 12, a day trip has been planned to visit the Rolls-Royce museum in Derby and members are requested to make their payments for this by the March 30 meeting.
