But is it crickart...?

A HARROGATE gallery is to display the works of an unlikely new artist - England cricket captain, Michael Vaughan OBE.

Better known for leading his team to an historic Ashes victory in 2005 than abstract art, in his spare time Vaughan has been combining his passion for sport and art in a unique venture which he hopes captures a whole new stroke of genius.

Yorkshire's hero returns to his spiritual home this Sunday with a one-day tour of Castle Galleries Leeds, from 1-3pm where he will meet and talk to his fans and personalise the back of any art purchased during his visit.

Described as "Damien Hirst meets Jackson Pollock," Vaughan uses a technique he calls 'artballing', where he paints each cricket ball a symbolic colour and then skilfully bats it against a blank canvas to create his highly contemporary and unique pieces of abstract art, with a story woven into each canvas.

The four limited edition prints include the perfect Six!, Power Play a lively and colourful artwork, the evocative Day/Night image which brilliantly contrasts, white and red balls catapulted against the drama of a black backdrop and Yes, No, Maybe? featuring red, orange and green to symbolise the universally recognised symbols of 'stop', 'go' and indecision.

Vaughan's early love of art was cemented in the first part of this decade when cricketing team mate Ashley Giles took Vaughan to the art galleries in Shoreditch, during 'rained off' matches in London.

This fuelled Vaughan's passion for abstract expressionist art and sparked the idea for combining the two art forms of cricket with art.

Escaping to a warehouse in Yorkshire, Vaughan created the art at over 100mph, which also provided a therapeutic tonic to his emotional retirement from international cricket.

Michael Vaughan's 'artballing' is published by the UK's leading fine art publishers – Washington Green Fine Art Publishing – with a small and exclusive edition size of just 195 per image, each of them hand-finished and signed by Vaughan.
