Budding artists learn how to turn scrap into sculpture

YOUNG students at King James's School in Knaresborough got creative when they enjoyed a whole day of art and craft workshops including making a huge range of original designs from willow-sculpted birds to stone-carved faces.

The Year 7 activities included willow weaving, wood carving, stone carving, junk metal sculpture, ceramic work, plaster sculptures and creating sculpture using a range recycled materials.

The event organiser, art teacher Jean Brake, said: “This has been a great day, letting pupils experience different ways of creating sculpture using some unfamiliar techniques that we don’t normally offer as part of the art curriculum.

“The day allows for an open-ended approach to their studies and allows pupils to work independently for a whole day.

“Rural Arts, a Yorkshire-based arts organisation, has brought together a range of art practitioners to help us deliver this exciting project.

“As a department we are also grateful for funding for this project from the school.”
