Bramham and Clifford Cricket Club attacked by yobs

VANDALS rammed garden chairs into the windows of Bramham and Clifford Cricket Club's pavilion before they ripped a score box apart and wrecked a nearby van.

The mindless incident happened around 3.30am on Sunday, February 28 and was reported to police by a nearby farmer who was woken to the sound of smashing glass in the middle of the night.

Groundsman Trevor Howard said the damage was a real blow to the Rhodes Lane-based cricket club which is currently preparing to start the new cricket season in just a few weeks time.

"There was party here on Friday night and one of the garden chairs was left outside which was used as a ramming instrument to smash three of the windows," he said.

"Our score box shutters were ripped off and a small van, which we are taking the engine out of to run an electricity generator, was also completely wrecked.

"It's a real inconvenience because we're now going to have to replace everything before the new cricket season starts in seven weeks time."

Mr Howard and his son, club chairman Richard Howard, told the Wetherby News they were keen to highlight the incident because "someone must know something".

"Someone must know something about who did this because the people who did it must be bragging about it," said Richard.

"This is not the first time the club has been broken into. We did have a break-in last year when they took tiles off the roof.

"It is just sheer vandalism and totally pointless and now we're left having to sort it," he said.

Wetherby Police Inspector Marcus Griffiths said he was confident the culprits would be caught and brought to justice as he believed they could be local.

Bramham Primary School was also attacked on the same night when a window was smashed, a drain pipe was broken and flower pots were ruined.
