Boroughbridge nets first-class cricket facilities

BOROUGHBRIDGE High School could become a become a school centre of excellence for Yorkshire County Cricket Club thanks to an investment in new cricketing facilities.

The school has had a long tradition of cricketing success with high numbers of pupils dedicated to the game and a number playing at county level.

investment

A recent 100,000 investment by North Yorkshire County Council in refurbished sports facilities and new cricket nets now means that students and the local community have access to first class facilities.

The county council cash has resulted in upgrading of changing rooms and the creation of a community meeting room as well as five state-of-the art cricket nets.

These facilities along with an outdoor cricket strip which was installed last summer and part-funded by the Lord Taverners, means that Boroughbridge's amenities are top of the league.

celebration

At an opening ceremony, Joe Sayers, Yorkshire's opening batsman, and Stewart Regan, chief executive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, attended to celebrate the new facilities along with local councillors, school staff, governors and pupils. As a result, the school is about to enter talks with Yorkshire County Cricket with a view to making Boroughbridge a centre of cricketing excellence.

'great news'

Ivan Nicholson, the school's deputy head, said students and staff were thrilled to have such top quality facilities. "This is great news for the school. A high proportion of the boys here play cricket and now they will be able to practice and play all the year round to the highest standards."

County Coun Jim Clark, North Yorkshire's Executive Member for Schools said: "The local authority is delighted that as a result of this investment Boroughbridge can now offer first class sporting amenities. We are determined that school children across our county have the opportunity to develop their physical education to the highest standards and we are thrilled that Boroughbridge High School's tradition in cricketing excellence can now be recognised at the highest levels."
