Bebrans arrive for twinning celebrations
MORE than 80 visitors from Knaresborough's twin town of Bebra in Germany arrived this week to help celebrate the 40th twinning anniversary.
With friendly rivalries over a certain recent World Cup match forgotten, the celebrations will take place over the next five days with tonight's official opening ceremony for the weekend held at King James's School.
Invited dignitaries and guests attending include the mayors of Harrogate and Knaresborough, Couns Bill Hoult and Richard Hall and their mayoresses, MP Andrew Jones, local councillors and former MP Lord Willis and all those associated with town twinning past and present.
Knaresborough Silver Band and TSV Musikzug from Bebra will be providing musical entertainment as well as an Alphorn group, and the two bands will also both be playing on Sunday afternoon in Harrogate's Valley Gardens.
Over the weekend, the host families and guests will be enjoying social get-togethers including a Barn Dance and barbecue night.
On Sunday, a special celebration service is being held at Gracious Street Methodist Church at 10am to which all are welcome.
Chairman of Knaresborough's Town Twinning Committee, Coun Mavis Clemmitt, said: "We extend a warm welcome to Horst and Briggitta Gross, Burgermeister of Bebra from our twin town in Germany along with their many friends.
"As we celebrate 40 years of twinning, we renew many friendships and look forward to making new friends.
"Town twinning is still very much alive as Knaresborough welcomes over 80 visitors.
"I'd like to thank the committee for their hard work in organising this large event and a big thank you to the host families who once again have been most generous in opening their homes.
"We're looking forward to a most enjoyable few days spent in good company with our friends from Bebra."
