Banana drama for Irma
A HARROGATE pensioner has described the moment she discovered a rare food phenomenon- a straight banana!
Irma Gledhill, 90, of Greenfield Court, Wetherby Road said she was given the oddly shaped fruit after eating dinner one night at her residential home.
"I said, 'Oh, I've got a straight banana! I thought it was a joke," she explained.
"After lunch we all laughed about it and we showed it around. Instead of the usual pudding I asked for fruit.
"It was quite a long straight banana. It was a beautiful yellow to start with but after a while it started to go brown."
Straight bananas hit the news in the 80s when the rumour mill spuriously suggested Brussels wanted to ban the food.
So what is the fate for Mrs Gledhill's banana? "If I can't do anything else, I will eat it," she said.
