BackCare Harrogate & District Support Group

BackCare Harrogate & District Support Group

THE meeting was opened by Samantha McCaughan, who welcomed guest speaker Dr Mark Gronnow from YorkTest Laboratories. Mark gave a very professional presentation on food intolerance and allergies, starting with the immune system. He explained that the treatment for allergic reactions can be to gradually introduce a small quantity of the allergen, and slowly increase it so that it builds up resistance. Standard methods of testing include prick on the arm followed by observation of the reaction on the skin. Then you can eliminate the offending allergen, but this process could take two years.

With regard to food intolerance, conditions related to this can include IBS, dermatological conditions, respiratory problems, lethargy and fatigue (dairy group can cause this) and musculoskeletal conditions, including back problems.

To identify problem foods the most commonly used method is to eliminate the suspect foods from the diet but this must be done under medical supervision and it can be time consuming. An alternative method is the ELISA test carried out at YorkTest from a small pinprick of blood which the client takes themself and sends in by post. The results list all the sensitive foods and their degree of safety in the diet. The vast majority of people stick with the dietary changes recommended and get relief of their symptoms. The service includes a telephone follow up with a professional dietician.

After several questions from the group, the vote of thanks was given by Gloria Cooke.

The next meeting is July 1 at 7.30pm at the Elmwood Day Care Unit, Harrogate District Hospital. This is the Members’ Annual Open Forum and discussion on the A to Z of Back Pain. Admission 1. More information from A Eckford, 01423 867121.
