Appeal for daffodil volunteers

NUMEROUS top celebrities are encouraging Wetherby residents to volunteer for Marie Curie this spring.

Stephen Fry, Tony Blackburn, Lynda Bellingham, Jon Culshaw, Stephen Mangan and Sir Ranulph Fiennes are among the stars supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal.

They contributed to a video aiming to recruit an army of volunteers to collect for this year's appeal.

Each March the charity encourages everyone in the UK to give a donation in return for a daffodil to wear in support of Marie Curie Nurses. All money raised will help Marie Curie Cancer Care provide free nursing care for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in their own homes and the charity's hospices.

Marie Curie Cancer Care's services are free to patients, their families and carers, but the charity can only provide these with your support.

Claire Priestwood, community fundraiser in the Wetherby district, said: "We organise numerous supermarket and street collections when we give away one of our distinctive lapel daffodils in return for a donation and we need lots of people to collect.

"An hour of your time, or even better two, is invaluable to us, or why not get together with a few friends or colleagues and take on a whole day and have a real sense of achievement. With the help of Wetherby people we can make it our best ever year!"

Marie Curie nursing ambassador Ann Brady said: "Most people would want to be cared for at home if they were terminally ill.

"Marie Curie Nurses like me working in Wetherby allow people this choice because we provide end of life care, totally free to patients in their own homes.

"I'll be out collecting this March to ensure more people get to die peacefully at home surrounded by their family whilst receiving the very best care. After all, everyone should have that choice."

Marie Curie Cancer Care urgently needs to recruit 20,000 volunteer collectors to help nationally with its Great Daffodil Appeal in 2010. The charity is asking for volunteer collectors to give an hour of their time this February and March to help someone in their final hours.

Anyone with more time available can also help organise collections, volunteer at a local fundraising office or distribute daffodil boxes to local suppliers.
